You're invited to join us for a Twitter chat on the topic of Medication Safety for Older Adults. The chat will take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday, July 6.
The Canada Safety Council recently released a report that indicates two-thirds of seniors are taking more than five prescription medications a year, with 5 per cent taking more than 15 daily medications. At the poison centre, we continue to receive more and more calls about drug interactions in this age group, which further shows that medication errors and drug interactions in seniors are growing public health concerns both nationally and provincially.
The discussion will centre around the following topics:
- Estimating the scope of unintentional poisonings related to polypharmacy (taking multiple medications) among older adults
- Discussing factors that contribute to the increased risk for unintentional poisonings among this age group in different care settings
- Assessing what strategies and prevention techniques can be used to reduce the instance of unintentional poisonings related to polypharmacy in older adults
You can follow the chat @ON_Poison and using the hashtag #OPCChat. We hope you'll join this conversation. Send us a tweet to let us know if you're joining us! If you'd like to help us spread the word, you can share the image below on Twitter.
