POISON ALERT: OPC warns of possible contaminants in street drug supply
Wild Mushrooms are Dangerous
Toronto Public Health recently issued a warning regarding wild mushrooms. This warning echoes messaging that the Ontario Poison Centre has been promoting for years. Wild mushrooms can be found growing in forests and wooded areas as well as in urban areas such as backyards, playgrounds and parks. Many poisonous mushrooms look very much like non-poisonous ones. Although fatal mushroom poisonings are relatively rare in Ontario, they do happen. Dr. Margaret Thompson, medical director of the Ontario Poison Centre says, "while it may be tempting for some residents to forage for wild mushrooms, it can be difficult to determine if mushrooms growing in the wild are edible or poisonous. Our advice is not to take the risk." For more information about the warning visit the City of Toronto site.
